About
The story behind The Safari Operator — and the person running it.
DRAFT — NOT FOR PUBLICATION
The question that started this
My father first took me to the Kruger National Park when I was a child. It stayed with me. Not just the animals — the whole thing: the early mornings, the guides, the camps, the sense that you were in a place that ran on its own logic.
He also gave me advice I didn't fully understand at the time: explore life before you come back to safari. So I did. Finance. Marketing. IT infrastructure. Production. Startups. Software engineering. A decade of building and operating things in different industries.
When I eventually came back — first helping to operate a lodge, then getting closer to the industry — I brought a different question with me: what if everything I had learned building and running other things could be applied to how safari businesses operate?
Not to make safari more like tech. To use better thinking, better systems and appropriate technology to give people more time for what matters most in safari: the human work. The guiding. The care. The connection.
What I actually do
I'm a safari operator and software engineer. I've trained as a nature guide. [TODO: approved credential wording to be inserted here.] I work with lodges and operators on the systems and thinking behind their operations.
I also plan bespoke safaris and, where my qualifications and permissions apply, guide privately.
The Safari Operator is the platform where I think publicly about this work: what I observe, what I'm testing, what I disagree with, what I don't yet know.
This platform
The Safari Operator is an editorial and industry platform about building, running and rethinking African safari businesses. It's not a consulting brochure. It's not a travel-booking site. It's not Shuriway's content-marketing arm.
It exists because I think the industry deserves serious, honest writing from people who are actually operating in it — not press releases, generic tips or innovation theatre. And because I want to learn in public, which means publishing before I have all the answers.
The platform may generate demand for my operating work and safari services. That's fine. But the editorial work comes first, and it's editorially independent.
Brand relationships
The Safari Operator is the editorial and industry platform. It's connected to — but distinct from — the following:
- The Bushpreneur is my broader personal brand. Similar interests, broader canvas.
- Shuri Management is my management and operating practice for safari properties. Separate from this platform.
- Shuriway is a safari technology and booking platform I'm building. It may appear in editorial coverage where relevant and disclosed, but it's not the hidden agenda of this platform.
